On 20 January 2026, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology Thor Chetha conducted a field inspection of progress on the Stueng Touch-Stueng Kram Bathi drainage system subproject and three pumping stations under the Cheung Ek main canal system subproject. According to the ministry, these works are nearly 100% complete and form part of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project to drain and divert water from Phnom Penh and surrounding areas.
The inspected works are located in Kampong Speu province and Phnom Penh. The Stueng Touch-Stueng Kram Bathi subproject is intended to divert water from the Prek Tnaot stream at an estimated capacity of 300 cubic meters per second through Stueng Touch into Boeung Tonle Bati and onward to Boeung Cheung Lok.
Key works under that subproject include rehabilitation of Stueng Touch and Stueng Kram Bathi over a total length of 58 kilometers and construction of 66 hydraulic structures, including one water control structure with a height of 8 meters, a width of 51 meters, and a length of 300 meters.
For the Cheung Ek main canal system subproject, located in Kamboul and Dangkor districts in Phnom Penh, the ministry said the main works include three primary canals and one connecting canal with a combined length of 26.5 kilometers, as well as three pumping stations: Sak Sampov, Anlong Kong, and Prek Chrey.
MOWRAM stated that the broader Phnom Penh and satellite-area drainage and water diversion project, covering Phase 1 and Phase 2, includes 10 subprojects. These comprise rehabilitation of 10 streams and canals with a total length of about 260 kilometers and construction of 366 hydraulic structures.
The ministry said the overall project area covers 18 communes in four districts of Kampong Speu province, 28 communes in five districts and municipalities of Kandal province, 10 sangkats in three districts of Phnom Penh, and 15 villages in two communes of one district in Takeo province.
