Cambodia Transport Regulation: MPWT Enforcement of Vehicle Weight Limits on National Roads

Background

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) can deploy special task forces to inspect freight vehicles under direct ministerial orders as part of its administrative transport oversight. MPWT-led inspections on 10–11 July 2026 checked heavy vehicles at National Road 8 (km30) in Kandal province and at National Road 67 in Siem Reap province.

Vehicle weight-limit enforcement is conducted through roadside inspections on designated national roads and is administered by MPWT coordination with provincial teams. These inspections record vehicle counts and measured overloads in tonnes to document compliance with allowable load standards on the road network.

Key Developments

  • On 10–11 July 2026, MPWT special working teams conducted inspections at National Road 8, km 30 (Khsach Kandal district), Kandal province; 11 vehicles were checked and 3 were found overloaded. Two vehicles exceeded the limit by 14 tonnes each, and one vehicle exceeded it by 29 tonnes.
  • At National Road 67 (Banteay Srei district), Siem Reap province, teams inspected 2 vehicles and found both overloaded, with excesses reported up to 22 tonnes.

Institutional Role

The operation was executed by a special working group acting under direct instruction from the minister and led by a State Secretary serving as the group head. MPWT uses designated teams to carry out route-based inspections on national roads to monitor heavy vehicle compliance with weight regulations.

Operational Implications

These inspection results provide concrete, time-stamped measurements of overload incidents on two national routes and can inform provincial enforcement planning and freight load management. Freight operators and logistics planners operating on National Road 8 and National Road 67 should account for active weight inspections when scheduling and loading consignments.
