Background
Modernization of irrigation infrastructure in Cambodia focuses on upgrading canal networks, water control structures and delivery systems to better match seasonal cropping needs and climate variability. The Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project (IAIP) includes modernization of the Stung Chinit irrigation system in Kampong Thom Province.
The IAIP modernization works are financed by the Asian Development Bank to improve irrigation infrastructure efficiency. The project is expected to provide irrigation water for rice cultivation and mixed crops two to three times per year, supporting both multiple cropping cycles and local livelihoods.
Key Developments
On 14 May 2026, His Excellency Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, conducted an on-site inspection of progress on the Stung Chinit modernization works. MOWRAM reported that the works form part of the IAIP program of investments aimed at upgrading irrigation structures to better respond to farmers’ needs and climate change challenges.
Operational Implications
Upgraded irrigation conveyance and control systems are intended to increase water delivery reliability and allow more precise scheduling of irrigation for rice and mixed crops. The project’s scope to support two- to three-season irrigation cycles can influence cropping patterns and short-term farm income without altering current land tenure arrangements.
