Background
Upgrading interprovincial road corridors is a core infrastructure function for reducing transport costs and improving access between population centers, border crossings and agricultural production zones. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) implements periodic road rehabilitation and widening projects to restore resilient pavements and to manage hydrological risks along low-lying routes.
The MPWT upgraded three road segments — National Route 73 and Provincial Routes 377 and 377A — totaling 98.405 kilometers. The project included construction of nine new bridges and rehabilitation of three existing bridges, and used an estimated budget of USD 43.95 million.
Key Developments
On 25 August 2026, Minister Peng Pothina attended the formal inauguration of the completed works under the high patronage of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The works covered about 49.812 kilometers of National Route 73 (in Tbong Khmom province) and about 48.593 kilometers of Provincial Routes 377 and 377A (in Kratie province).
Road surfaces were upgraded using asphalt concrete (AC) and fiber-reinforced concrete, and the project installed road signage and safety posts to meet technical standards. The inauguration drew officials from national and provincial government, representatives from the World Bank (including Tania Meyer, World Bank country director for Cambodia), private-sector guests and local residents.
Operational Implications
The completed upgrades are intended to address road degradation and flood-related vulnerabilities on the three segments, and to facilitate movement of goods, agricultural produce and people between local communities and regional markets. Improved pavement standards and additional bridge capacity are expected to increase route reliability during seasonal high-water events and reduce maintenance needs compared with the prior degraded alignments.
Institutional Role
The MPWT acts as the lead agency for planning, procurement and technical standards of Cambodia’s national and provincial road network, coordinating with provincial administrations for construction oversight and with development partners for financing. Infrastructure projects of this scale provide a documented precedent for future MPWT road rehabilitation contracts and for central-provincial coordination on resilient road design standards.
