Background
National Road 5 received a coordinated infrastructure upgrade intended to strengthen road visibility and signage along a key transport corridor. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport carried out the program with technical cooperation from JICA as part of routine road safety and infrastructure improvement activities.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport installed 15,450 anti-glare panels and 59,287 delineators along National Road 5. The upgrade package added 24 traffic-light poles, 10 overhead steel-frame signs and 217 additional traffic signs, together with public road lighting and refreshed road markings.
Key Developments
Implementation focused on a mix of passive and active traffic-control measures. Teams completed widespread placement of anti-glare panels and delineators, upgraded signal poles and overhead signage, and renewed pavement markings and public lighting to improve daytime and night-time roadway guidance.
Institutional Role
MPWT led the planning and execution of the installations and coordinated implementation with JICA for technical support and equipment provision. Provincial and local road maintenance units are the customary custodians for ongoing upkeep following central deployment of traffic equipment.
Operational Implications
The installed anti-glare panels and delineators serve to reduce headlight glare and clarify lane edges during low-light conditions, while the additional signs and lighting standardize route information for drivers. Sustained effectiveness will depend on routine maintenance, sign cleaning, and timely replacement of damaged elements by responsible road authorities.
