Background
On 23 March 2026, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport officially inaugurated the Bavet City solid waste disposal site subproject in Svay Rieng Province. The inauguration was presided over by Minister Peng Ponea and attended by Yasmin Siddiqi, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank in Cambodia, provincial governors, ministry leadership, provincial council representatives, and residents.
The subproject forms part of the Livable Cities Development Project. According to the ministry, construction began in February 2025 and was completed in March 2026.
Project Details
The solid waste disposal site was constructed on an area of 20.7 hectares. It is intended to operate for 20 years and provide solid waste management services to residents in five sangkats of Bavet City: Bavet, Prey Angkunh, Prasat, Bati, and Chak Mtes.
The facility was designed with five landfill cells to be developed across four phases. In the first phase, two cells were constructed with a total storage capacity of 427,000 cubic metres, intended for use over approximately six and a half years.
Operational Significance
According to the ministry, the disposal site is expected to support sanitation and environmental improvement objectives in Bavet City. The project is also intended to contribute to public health protection through expanded solid waste management service capacity.
