Background
On 13 March 2026 in Tokyo and Okinawa, the Commercial Attaché to the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Japan, Mr. SIN Saray, conducted working discussions and promotional activities aimed at enhancing Cambodia–Japan economic relations. The engagements involved private sector partners active in tourism and distribution of Cambodian products, as well as participation in an international food exhibition.
Scope of Application
The activities concern trade and investment promotion between Cambodia and Japan, with a focus on:
- Promotion and distribution of Cambodian food products in the Japanese market, particularly in Okinawa Prefecture.
- Tourism flows between Siem Reap/Phnom Penh and Okinawa through potential charter flight operations.
- Educational support and human resource development initiatives in Siem Reap Province.
- Branding and marketing of Cambodian cuisine and products in Japan via a planned Khmer restaurant and trade fair participation.
Key Provisions or Decisions
According to the Ministry of Commerce, the following points were discussed and highlighted:
- The Commercial Attaché held a working meeting with Mr. TANIMURA Shoki, President of Jumbo Tours Co., Ltd. in Okinawa Prefecture, and Ms. Sat Vichary, President of Magokoro Cambodia in Siem Reap Province, to discuss cooperation in strengthening trade, investment, education, and tourism between Cambodia and Japan, as well as promotion of Cambodian products in Japan.
- Both sides exchanged views on encouraging the launch of special charter flights between Siem Reap/Phnom Penh and Okinawa Prefecture to support growth in tourist numbers between the two countries.
- The parties discussed continued provision of assistance in the form of school buildings and study materials for underprivileged students in Siem Reap Province, and support for Japanese language training schools contributing to human resource development in Cambodia.
- A project to open a Khmer restaurant in Okinawa Prefecture was discussed, with the aim of further promoting Cambodian cuisine and products in the Japanese market.
- The companies informed that since mid-2025 they have cooperated in promoting and supplying Cambodian products, especially Kampot pepper, pepper pickles and Kampot salt, to major restaurants and hotels in Okinawa, including Hyatt, Sheraton and Hotel JAL City.
- In the afternoon of the same day, the Commercial Attaché attended the FOODEX Japan exhibition, held from 10–13 March 2026 at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, to support the participation and promotion of Cambodian products by the two companies, including Kampot pepper, pepper pickles, Kampot salt, cashew nuts and handicraft products.
- The participation at FOODEX Japan also aimed to build additional business and investor networks and to promote growth in bilateral trade, particularly in the import–export of food and beverage products between Cambodia and Japan.
Implications for Investors, Businesses, or Compliance
These engagements signal ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Commerce and the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Japan to deepen market access for Cambodian products and expand tourism linkages with Japan. Businesses involved in food, beverage, handicrafts and hospitality may find opportunities in the Japanese market, particularly through established channels in Okinawa hotels and restaurants and through international trade fairs such as FOODEX Japan. The exploration of charter flights between Siem Reap/Phnom Penh and Okinawa could create additional demand for tourism-related services and Cambodian products. While no new formal regulations or incentives are announced, the activities highlight practical cooperation avenues for exporters, tour operators and investors targeting Cambodia–Japan trade and tourism.
