The Ministry of Commerce announced that it will co-organize with the OECD the launch of the 2023 Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India, focused on post-pandemic tourism recovery. The launch event and a subsequent press conference will be held online on 31 March 2023, with public and media invited to register via Zoom.
A Cambodian delegation led by Secretary of State Roth Saravuth of the Ministry of Commerce joined the Special Meeting of the ASEAN–Canada Free Trade Agreement Trade Negotiating Committee in Bandung, Indonesia, on 23 February 2023. Cambodia called for ASEAN to maintain a common position in a non-paper to Canada covering environment, labour, and inclusive trade, and proposed specialized working groups on these themes.
A Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce met with a delegation from the US-ASEAN Business Council, led by Ambassador Michalak, to discuss existing and potential US business activities in Cambodia. The discussion covered ongoing projects, including automotive assembly and electronic payment services, and explored further investment prospects, particularly in the health sector and private hospitals.
The Ministry of Commerce announced the opening of the third round of negotiations on the Cambodia–UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Dubai, scheduled from 20–22 February 2023. The meeting reviewed outstanding issues and progress related to the negotiations to upgrade the AANZFTA agreement, with Cambodia reiterating its commitment to concluding the upgrade for subsequent signing by ASEAN, Australian and New Zealand economic ministers.
A Ministry of Commerce delegation visited the Philippines from 1–3 February 2023 to study the rice market and discuss export opportunities for Cambodian rice. Both sides agreed to explore a new memorandum of understanding on state-to-state rice trade, while the Philippines also welcomed direct private-sector rice trading based on mutually agreed volumes, quality, and prices.
The Minister of Commerce met with the Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs on the sidelines of the 2023 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. The discussion covered growing bilateral trade, the possibility of a Cambodia–Switzerland free trade agreement, and Swiss support to Cambodia’s development programs.
The Ministry of Commerce announced the organization of the 8th seasonal Buy Khmer Products campaign through the 16th Khmer Products and Fruits and Vegetables Exhibition. The event will be held in Siem Reap city from 24–27 February 2023 to promote domestic trade activities and support local producers.
The Ministry of Commerce and the Australian Embassy in Cambodia launched two market information research documents and announced a Single Digital Platform to support trade and investment. The platform will include an FTA Portal, a self-certification system for certificates of origin, and an international rule-of-origin verification system to help businesses maximise benefits from Cambodia’s free trade agreements.
