Cambodia Drug Enforcement: National Police and Gendarmerie Nationwide Narcotics Operations

Background

The National Police and Royal Gendarmerie carry out coordinated interdiction operations through provincial units to detect, arrest, and process suspects involved in narcotics offenses. The National Police and Royal Gendarmerie executed coordinated operations on 12 August that resulted in 15 narcotics cases and 34 arrests nationwide.

Operational reporting on narcotics enforcement in Cambodia documents seizures by substance and the participating law-enforcement units to support case processing and inter-agency referrals. Authorities reported seizures of 370.07 grams of methamphetamine, 49.66 grams of ketamine, and 37.80 grams of MDMA during the operations.

Key Developments

The operations recorded 15 separate case files across offence types categorized in the authorities’ summary as trafficking, transport/storage, and use. Reported counts by offence type were: 4 trafficking cases with 17 arrests; 10 transport/storage cases with 14 arrests; and 1 use case with 3 arrests.

Enforcement Actions

Nine enforcement units participated in the 12 August operations, including seven police units and two Royal Gendarmerie units. Provincial-level results reported by the National Police included specific seizures of methamphetamine (Ice) in Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Kandal, Koh Kong, Ratanakiri, Stung Treng, and Takeo; the Royal Gendarmerie actions in Kampong Cham and Preah Sihanouk reported larger methamphetamine recoveries and additional ketamine and MDMA seizures.

Institutional Role

Provincial police departments function as the primary investigation and arrest authorities for local narcotics cases, while the Royal Gendarmerie supplements operations in selected provinces and ports of entry. Combined reporting of arrests, case counts, and substance weights enables centralized record-keeping for subsequent prosecutions and inter-agency coordination.
