Background
Irrigation canals in Cambodia are engineered to manage drainage, reduce local flooding, and deliver water for both wet- and dry-season rice production in lowland farming areas. The Kdan canal restoration project includes a 5,000-metre canal and 14 hydraulic structures designed to regulate flows and support irrigation distribution.
As of early June 2026 the project was reported at approximately 60% physical completion and is scheduled for stable completion in July 2026. Once completed, the rehabilitated canal is expected to provide irrigation for 1,050 hectares of wet-season rice and 2,500 hectares of dry-season (off-season) rice and to deliver direct daily-use benefits to about 1,858 households across eight villages in Rohat Teuk commune, Mongkol Borei district, Banteay Meanchey province.

Project documents reported that the scope of works comprises rehabilitation of the canal alignment, reconstruction of associated embankments and construction of 14 hydraulic structures along the 5,000-metre reach.
Institutional Role
The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) exercises technical oversight of the canal rehabilitation through its Directorate of Engineering, which conducts site inspections and issues operational guidance to project teams. During the inspection the director recommended that the site chief and technical teams prioritise efficient equipment management and strict adherence to the project’s technical designs and construction standards.
Operational Implications
Completion of the Kdan canal restoration will increase local drainage capacity and enable expanded irrigated cultivation across a combined 3,550 hectares, with implications for seasonal cropping patterns and household water use in the affected communes. Project management directives emphasised equipment efficiency and compliance with engineering specifications to secure long-term structural durability and to meet the planned July 2026 completion milestone.
