Background
Automatic weather stations are part of Cambodia’s meteorological infrastructure for collecting temperature, humidity, wind, pressure, and related climate data. Meteorological data systems support weather forecasting, hydrological monitoring, agricultural planning, and public warning functions that depend on timely transmission of field observations to central servers.
The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology is responsible for national water and meteorological services, including operation of monitoring equipment in the provinces. Maintenance of automatic weather stations is a technical governance function that helps keep climate data continuous, comparable, and available for official forecasting and analysis.
In provincial networks, reliable station performance depends on functioning sensors, power systems, data loggers, and telecommunications links. Inspection and repair work therefore forms part of the operational upkeep of Cambodia’s environmental monitoring infrastructure.
Key Developments
According to MOWRAM, technical officials from the ministry’s Department of Meteorology continued a field mission on 7 April 2026 to inspect, repair, and maintain automatic weather stations in Tboung Khmum province.
The ministry stated that the work was carried out to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of accurate and timely climate data transmission. The technical team coordinated with the Tboung Khmum Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology during the mission.
MOWRAM said the team inspected and maintained five automatic weather station sites: Kong Chey station in Thmei village, Kong Chey commune, Ou Reang Ov district; Krouch Chhmar station in Krouch Chhmar Leu village, Krouch Chhmar commune, Krouch Chhmar district; Dambae station in Khchay village, Dambae commune, Dambae district; Ponhea Krek station in Po Thi Srok village, Kaong Kang commune, Ponhea Krek district; and Memot station in Memong village, Memong commune, Memot district.
The ministry reported that the technical work included inspection of measurement instruments, checking the data logger system to ensure transmission to the main server, downloading data, and replacing SIM cards. Additional repairs included work on the humidity measurement device at Kong Chey station, electrical system repairs and relay replacement at Krouch Chhmar station, rechecking temperature, wind direction, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure instruments, and cleaning the surrounding station environment.
Implications
The maintenance mission indicates continued operational support for Cambodia’s provincial meteorological monitoring network. Functional automatic weather stations help reduce interruptions in data collection and transmission used in forecasting and related government monitoring activities.
For agriculture, water management, and local administration, more reliable station performance can support better access to routine climate observations at the provincial level. The work also shows the ministry’s role in maintaining field equipment that feeds data into centralized meteorological systems.
