Background
Cambodia’s water infrastructure system includes reservoirs, dams, canals, and related hydraulic structures used to store water, support irrigation, and improve dry-season water availability. The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology is the lead public institution responsible for planning, constructing, and overseeing this infrastructure.
Reservoir dam projects in Cambodia are commonly designed to serve both household water needs and agricultural irrigation in rural areas. Small and medium-scale irrigation infrastructure can increase the reliability of water supply for cultivated land and reduce seasonal water shortages in farming communities.
In Takeo province, MOWRAM’s engineering department conducted a site inspection of the Techo Sen Institute reservoir dam construction project in Trapeang Kranhoung commune, Tram Kak district, on 11 January 2026. According to the ministry, the project had reached approximately 60% completion and was scheduled for completion by the end of February 2026.
Key Developments
The inspection was led by Thang Viyuthda, Director of the Engineering Department, representing the Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, together with the ministry’s technical officials.
MOWRAM stated that the project includes construction of a 130-meter reservoir dam and two hydraulic structures. The ministry said the project is intended to store water for daily use by local residents.
According to MOWRAM, the completed project is also expected to expand irrigation capacity for 150 hectares of agricultural land and benefit around 116 farming households in Trapeang Kranhoung village, Trapeang Kranhoung commune, Tram Kak district, Takeo province.
During the visit, the Engineering Department director instructed the construction team to follow technical standards carefully and to accelerate implementation in line with the planned schedule.
Implications
The project indicates continued public investment in local water storage and irrigation infrastructure in Takeo province. If completed as scheduled, the reservoir dam would add both domestic water storage capacity and irrigation support for nearby agricultural land.
For farming households in the project area, the main implication is improved access to managed water supply for crop cultivation. For public administration, the inspection reflects MOWRAM’s ongoing technical supervision of water infrastructure delivery and construction standards.
