Background
The General Department of Immigration (GDI) oversees the deployment and operational management of immigration control systems at Cambodia’s international ports of entry.
Border management systems register passenger entries and exits and enable biometric identity verification at ports of entry. Automated e‑gate systems, commonly known as SmartGate, perform machine-assisted identity checks to accelerate passenger processing and reduce manual passport handling.
Key Developments
On 3–4 June 2026, GDI authorised an inspection visit and training programme at Siem Reap‑Angkor International Airport for the installation of Cambodia Border Management System II (CBMS II) and implementation of SmartGate automated controls. The inspection and training were led by the head of the Department of Information Technology within GDI, with participation from deputy department leaders, Gate‑1 management, station chiefs and deputy chiefs, airport immigration officers, and members of the visa issuance team.
Operational Implications
The event combined system commissioning activities with practical user training aimed at strengthening technical staff capacity in operating the CBMS II platform. Integrating CBMS II and SmartGate at an international airport introduces new procedures for electronic passenger recording and requires ongoing staff capability, system maintenance, and coordination between airport teams and central immigration IT staff.
