Background
Cambodia’s anti-drug enforcement system is carried out by police units that investigate alleged trafficking, possession, and use of illegal narcotics under the country’s criminal justice framework. Drug cases in Cambodia typically involve coordination between specialized anti-drug police, local police units, and the prosecutor to support arrest, seizure, and case-processing procedures.
Provincial police headquarters are responsible for implementing national policing directives within their jurisdictions. In Cambodia, prosecutorial supervision is a standard part of criminal procedure when police conduct enforcement operations and collect evidence for further legal action.
Key Developments
The National Police of Cambodia reported that Mondulkiri provincial police cracked down on a case involving the alleged trafficking, storage, and illegal use of narcotic substances on 4 January 2026 at 12:57 pm in Memong commune, Keo Seima district, Mondulkiri province.
According to the official report, the operation was carried out by the provincial anti-drug office in cooperation with the intervention office and Memong administrative police post under the Keo Seima district police inspectorate. The operation took place at a cashew plantation shed and at a mango plantation site in Tuol village, Memong commune.
Police said five male suspects were arrested. The report identified the suspects as Mao Neang, also known as Mum, 31, from Kratie province; Krouy Chet, 37, from Prey Veng province; Khum Theara, 20, from Mondulkiri province; Heng Lihour, 32, from Mondulkiri province; and Chaom Rotana, 24, a worker from Mondulkiri province.
The operation was led by a deputy provincial police chief responsible for anti-drug work and was conducted with procedural coordination from a deputy prosecutor at the Mondulkiri Provincial Court. Local authorities from Memong commune and Tuol village also participated, according to the report.
Police stated that urine tests on the five suspects showed positive results for methamphetamine. The report also said officers seized 36 drug packages, consisting of one large package and 35 small packages, described as methamphetamine.
Implications
The case indicates continued anti-narcotics enforcement by provincial police in northeastern Cambodia, including joint operations between specialized and local units. It also shows the routine use of prosecutor-coordinated procedure in criminal cases involving suspected drug distribution and possession.
For public administration and legal reference purposes, the report provides a documented example of how Cambodia’s police system handles suspected narcotics offenses at provincial level, including arrest, testing, seizure, and referral under criminal procedure. The case may be relevant for tracking drug enforcement patterns, provincial policing activity, and local coordination in security governance.
